WORKSHOP:

From Monitoring to Mitigation: Interim Insights from the GEOMONITOR Project in Slănic Prahova

 

This workshop will present the latest progress and interim results of the GEOMONITOR project, focused on integrated monitoring of geodynamic phenomena and associated hazards in the Slănic Prahova area. The session will feature five presentations covering key project components, including general objectives and status, passive and active seismic monitoring, multi-sensor geospatial techniques (TLS, UAV LiDAR, photogrammetry, InSAR), electrometric and geochemical investigations, and hydrogeological–geological assessments. The presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion with invited stakeholders, researchers, funding authorities, and local beneficiaries, aimed at exchanging knowledge, identifying synergies, and shaping future monitoring and mitigation actions. The session will also include the presentation of the beta version of the GEOMONITOR geospatial portal, designed to integrate multidisciplinary datasets, visualization tools, and interactive channels for early identification of local problems and stakeholder feedback.

we are pleased to host a dedicated educational workshop for secondary-school geography teachers from Ilfov County, organized within the STEAM EXPERIENCE project in partnership with the Ilfov County School Inspectorate.

Inspired by the model of the GIFT Workshops at the EGU General Assembly, this half-day event will offer teachers the opportunity to explore innovative approaches to teaching geosciences through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and interactive discussions.

The program will feature:

  • Practical workshops based on EarthLearningIdea activities and other interactive resources developed within the GEFO (Geoscience Education Field Officer) initiative.
  • Sessions on the importance of geosciences in understanding natural phenomena, hazards, and environmental changes, highlighting their relevance in high-school education.
  • Examples of STEAM integration showing how geoscience topics can foster curiosity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning among students.
  • Exchange of good practices between researchers and teachers, aimed at strengthening the role of geoscience in curricula and extracurricular activities.

The workshop is synchronized with the Pedagogical Circle of Geography Teachers in Ilfov, ensuring direct links to educational practice and local school networks.

By participating, teachers will gain ready-to-use classroom resources, inspiration for project-based learning, and new connections within the geoscience education community.

The Workshop of the project Geophysical Studies in High-Risk Areas (RO-GEO4SDG), part of the SEG Field Camp Program 2025, offers a unique perspective on implementing learning activities, research, and community outreach. Participants will explore how multidisciplinary collaboration between geological engineers, signal processing experts in satellite radar technology, educators in geophysics, geography, geology, physics, and mathematics, together with students from diverse fields, contributes to expanding knowledge and addressing pressing challenges in high-risk environments.

The workshop will showcase the case of Rătești village in Buzău County, Romania, where a devastating landslide in 2014 destroyed or severely damaged around 30 homes, forcing families to relocate. Through this example, the session will demonstrate how integrated geophysical approaches and knowledge-sharing can strengthen understanding, preparedness, and resilience in vulnerable areas, while also generating valuable teaching materials.

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the workshop particularly supports SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by promoting education, disaster risk reduction, and resilience in the face of natural hazards.
