Remote Sensing & Structure from Motion for Geomorphic Surveys

Remote Sensing and Structure from Motion for Geomorphic Surveys Workshop, scheduled to take place November 12-13, 2024, is an intensive training program designed for professionals, researchers and students in geomorphology, geology, and environmental science. Participants will learn cutting-edge techniques in Remote Sensing and Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry to collect and analyze high-resolution topographic data. The workshop covers practical skills in data acquisition, processing, and interpretation, enabling attendees to apply these methods in geomorphic surveys for landscape analysis, erosion studies, and environmental monitoring.

hosted by

Dr. Monica Palaseanu

Geology, Minerals, Energy and Geophysics Science Center –(GMEG), United States Geological Survey (USGS)

Since joining the USGS in 2006, Dr. Palaseanu has devoted her career to studying coastal environments and more. Presently her research focuses on erosion and landslides in coastal cliffs and bluffs, structure from motion using satellite imagery, and satellite derived bathymetry.

Day 1 - 14 November

Workshop

Evolution of the Eurasian Megalakes within the Paleogene-Quaternary interval: isolation and connection in the Paratethyan and Black Sea

The largest-known lake in the Earth history, comparable with the present-day Mediterranean volume, was the Paratethys, formed during the Lower Oligocene within a time of global climatic changes. Another Megalake of Eurasia was the Black Sea, which during the Last Glacial Maximum was a low salinity landlocked lake. After the deglaciation, the Black Sea connected with Mediterranean, but the way of the reconnection via the Bosphorus Strait was supposed to be either a very rapid (catastrophic) fill-in, progressive, or oscillating, being still under debate. Both the Neogene Paratethys Lake and Quaternary Black Sea experienced long intervals of isolation from the world ocean, followed by reconnection, events which substantially changes the climate, especially from the Eastern Europe up to the Middle East. During their isolation, a specific sedimentation took place, expressed in an anoxic sedimentation, followed by oxic depositional intervals, and also in the occurrence and extinction of endemic faunas and floras, replaced by the cosmopolitan ones.

This proposed workshop focused on various issues regarding the modifications which took place in the Paratethys and Black Sea in time and space, based on sedimentological, paleontological, geochemical, and geophysical data, aiming to point out intervals of -isolation and connectivity with the world ocean during Paleogene to Quaternary times in the two Eurasian Megalakes.

The topics of this workshop are included in NIRD GeoEcoMar projects PNRR C9 – I8 “Multiproxy reconstruction of Eurasian Megalakes, connectivity and isolation patterns during Neogene-Quaternary times”, code 97/15.11.2022 and Project PN 23 30 01 01 financed by the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitization.

NCH GeoRisks for CC workshop

Day 1

Natural and Cultural Heritage Facing Geographical Risks: A Workshop for Conscious Communities

Join us for a workshop focused on addressing the challenges that natural and cultural heritage sites facing geographical risks. NCH GeoRisks for CC workshop addresses communities aware of the need to protect the invaluable heritage at risks. The workshop will emphasize the relationship between communities, heritage, and risks. Since we were born, we have been living with various risks, that affect entire communities, their goods, as well as natural and cultural heritage. Geographical hazards are a significant aspect of the risk concept.

Experts will share insights on risk assessment, disaster mitigation, and sustainable preservation practices due to communities’ resilience. Participants will part in interactive and collaborative sessions to analyse the resilience and continuity of our heritage amidst increasing environmental threats. Together, let’s safeguard our legacy for future generations.

The NCH GeoRisks for CC is an workshop of the Project SPAH – Sustainable Participatory Activities for Heritage of University of Bucharest

Bucharest and Earthquakes

Day 1

Bucharest and Earthquakes

The tour takes place in the Bucharest city center and presents, from a visual, historical and technical perspective, what happened during the 1940 and 1977 Vrancea earthquakes. It also talks about the evolution of the city and the risk reduction perspectives, with Bucharest still being one of the most endangered capitals in Europe to earthquakes.

Tour guides will be experts in seismology and engineering from the National Institute for Earth Physics.

Ro-GEO4HUMANITY

Day 2

Workshop Geophysics for Civil Protection  &   Sustaining Humanitarian Aid Operations

Specialists in geophysics can be important human resources in humanitarian aid operations and in certain applications related to forensic explosives and explosion investigation, such as landmines & explosive remnants of war detection and nuclear test monitoring. However, so far, training offered for this possible path of a geophysicist career has been not considered in most of the students’ geophysics curricula.

This workshop will host presentations on topics related to the role of geoscience in civil protection and sustaining humanitarian aid,  ground, marine and airborne geophysics for UXO detection, signature of explosions in seismic and infrasound data, and education for meeting the SDG-UN.

The Workshop of the project RO-GEO4HUMANITY is part of SEG Field Camp Program 2024 and is organized by Romanian Society of Applied Geophysics (SGAR), Faculty of Geology and Geophysics of University of Bucharest, GeoEcoMar and National Institute of Earth Physics

Field Trip

Field Trip - Thematic: Geohazards

The field trip itinerary starts from Bucharest and consists of visiting geopoints along the Slanic Valley with a focus on geohazards triggered by mining activities in a prone-to landslide area. The field trip includes a descending at 200m below ground level, where Unirea salt mine chambers of heights of 54m allow to make direct observation of the salt layers and visiting spots with advanced subsidence cases.

The field trip  includes transportation, refreshments and lunch
